Today I’d like to show you how you can use my quilty space folks and use them to make a Party Planet play mat. The play mat finishes at about 40″ x 40″ and wouldn’t it be so perfect as a background for your little one’s monthly pictures?!
To provide my Space Shenanigans friends with a befitting party location I created this free Party Planet quilt block pattern:

Fabric requirements
To make your own Party Planet play mat you’ll need the following materials:
Making your Party Planet play mat
Refer to the diagrams and instructions below to assemble your quilt top.
- Make a Party Planet block, four 9″ x 9″ Space Shenanigans blocks of your choice and prepare the following background pieces:
BG1: 9 1/2″ x 7″ (4x)
BG2: 9 1/2″ x 16″ (4x)
- Add your background pieces BG1 and BG2 to the sides of your Space Shenanigans blocks and create the strip units shown in the diagram below. Press your seams towards the background pieces. Join the shorter strips to the top and bottom of your planet block first, then add the longer strips to both sides. Press your seams open.
- Mark four diagonal lines 9″ away from the edges of your Party Planet edge, then trim the resulting triangles off.
- Rotate the central unit by 45Β° and mark the middle of your longest triangle sides and corresponding edges of the central unit. Match up the markings and reattach the four corners in their new positions. Press your seams towards the background triangles.
- Trim off your dog ears, straighten up the sides of your play mat and square up as needed.
- Finish (quilt, baste and bind) as desired.
Alternatively, you can also use your entire Party Planet unit and combine it with further Space Shenanigans blocks and background pieces to create a larger quilt. What about this twin sized layout, for example?
Can’t wait to see what ideas you guys come up with!
