And of course everyone needs a bat quilt with an added haunted castle, am I right?!
Here we go!
A few notes before we start
- You will need the following quilt patterns:
- The bats, branches, moon: Mini Bat Buddies (get the pdf)
- The castle: Little Kingdom (get the pdf or printed pattern)
- The dimensions of the castle block are doubled as compared to the original Little Kingdom pattern. Please refer to the tables below when cutting your pieces! An enlarged FPP template for the castle roof can be found here:
- Fabric requirements:
Essentially, you will need the same materials as for the Mini Bat Buddies throw. Just have an extra FQ at hand for the castle, plus some scraps for the roof and door.
Cutting instructions
As mentioned above, the dimensions of the finished castle block are doubled as compared to the regular Little Kingdom pattern. Instead of the dimensions given in the pattern, use the following:
You can get all the pieces required for the castle out of 1 FQ:
Cut all the pieces listed in Tab. 3 of the Mini Bat Buddies pattern, but instead of one G, H, L piece, prepare the following two background pieces:
- BG1: 6 1/2″ x 23 1/2
- BG2: 11 1/2″ x 22 1/2
Sewing your bat and castle quilt
- Make a jumbo castle block following steps 10-23 of the Little Kingdom pattern, using the larger pieces and roof templates from above.
Important: During step 13, trim your K–U–K–U–K unit into two 2″ wide units! - RST, sew your BG1 piece to the top of your castle block and press your seam towards the BG1 piece.
- RST, sew your BG2 piece to the right of your castle block and press your seam towards the BG2 piece.
- Make all the quilt sections as described in steps 1-38 of the Mini Bat Buddies pattern, but make only 1 flying bat block. Don’t make the horizontal flying bat section shown in Fig. 16b!
- Follow the assembly instructions of the Mini Bat Buddies pattern (steps 48-54), using the castle section above instead of the horizontal flying bat section.
- Optional: If you like you can decorate your haunted castle with some appliqued ghosts and other details for some extra fun! Instructions and templates can be found in this tutorial.
- Finish (baste, quilt and bind) your quilt as desired.
And that’s it! Have fun with your own version! 😎
