There are sooo many great ways how you can combine my new Fairy Sisters and Fairy Boy patterns with other patterns of mine! Let’s add a sweet fairy friend to your favourite unicorn! Aren’t they just the cutest together?!
Or with a little fairy boy:
A few notes before we start
- Finished quilt size: 59″ x 72″ (identical to Unicorn Garden)
- You will need the following patterns:
- Unicorn Garden (get the pdf or printed booklet)
- Fairy Sisters (get the pdf or printed booklet) or Fairy Boy (get the pdf)
- The fabric requirements for the quilt top are basically those of Unicorn Garden. Just have some extra scraps at hand for the fairy details.
Making your fairy and unicorn quilt top
Follow these steps to make your unicorn and fairy quilt top:
- Follow steps 1 to 60 of the Unicorn Garden pattern. Keep all the off-cuts of your background fabric!
- Using the back-ground fabric off-cuts from step 1 (plus additional background fabric as required) and your assorted scraps for the fairy details, make one right-facing fairy block of the smaller size included in the Fairy Sisters pattern or the smaller fairy block from Fairy Boy (both finishing at 8” x 12”)
- Instead of the bb piece from Unicorn Garden, make the unit outlined in the diagram below (completed dimensions 22” x 21 1/2″), using:
- Your fairy block
- BG1: 8 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ (1x)
- BG2: 8 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ (1x)
- BG3: 7 1/4″ x 21 1/2″ (2x)
If you already cut your bb piece, you can still use it to sub-cut your BG1-3 pieces and use up the rest while making the fairy block.
- Use this unit instead of the bb piece when assembling the quilt top (steps 61 to 81 of the Unicorn Garden pattern).
- Finish (quilt, baste and bind) your quilt as desired.
The same concept also works if you have another quilt block that you’d like to add (e.g. a butterfly, bird, dragonfly, hummingbird,… I can’t wait what you come up with!). If the blocks are small you might even want to consider using multiples. The key is to make a unit measuring 22” x 21 1/2″ unfinished (horizontal orientation), that you then use instead of a plain bb piece. And it also works for the toddler option without the flower garland.
Have fun with this one!

Is there any way to get the fairy block as I have already purchased the Unicorn Garden pattern without purchasing a complete new pattern.
Astrid says
Hi, unfortunately I do not have a separate pattern for a single block, only the Fairy Sisters mini quilt with the fairies facing left and right, and including both block sizes.
Rhonda says
Thank you for the dimensions. I will try to send x picture of my finished quilt.

Happy stitching!
