Wanna make a dragon quilt with a royal sleepyhead? Need a tutorial? Here you go!
I recently made this Dragon Dreams wall hanging and put a crown on my little dragon’s head. Just because! π
The shown mini quilt is actually scaled down to 50% of the original size (I’ll share the details for that separately, hopefully soon!). I used the 3″ template of my Pocket Crown FPP pattern, but you can achieve the same effect using the regular Dragon Dreams crib size and the 6″ Pocket Crown template. So this is what I’m describing in this tutorial.
Notes
- The quilt shown above uses elements from 2 different quilt patterns:
- The dragon: Dragon Dreams (get the pdf or printed booklet)
- The crown: Pocket Crown (get the pdf), using the included 6″ template
- The crown addition has basically no influence on the fabric requirements of your dragon quilt. All you need is an extra scrap for the crown.
Making your dragon sections
Ok, let’s start! There is only one minor change required when making your dragon:
- Instead of the dd piece of your Dragon Dreams quilt pattern, prepare the following two background pieces:
BG1: 4 1/2″ x 8 1/2″
BG2: 14 1/2″ x 34″
- Prepare all dragon sections as stated in step 1 to 74 of th the Dragon Dreams pattern.
Preparing your crown block
Time to make your Pocket Crown! When piecing your FPP crown block there are a few modifications required to ensure a perfect fit on your dragons head after.
- Piece your FPP sections “1” to “7” according to the pattern.
Important: You’ll want an overhang of background fabric of at least a 1″ on the right side of your finished crown block. To achieve this, make sure to sufficiently oversize the pieces for sections “3” and “7” on the left side of your paper template. The two pictures below show both sides of your block.
You won’t need the bottom piece of your Pocket Crown quit block (labelled as section “8”).
- When you’re done piecing the Pocket Crown block (without section “8”), trim your block 1/4″ below the base line of the crown (β ) and along the right edge of your paper template (β‘). Then, trim your unfinished crown block to be 4 1/2″ high (β’) and carefully remove the remaining paper. Keep the overhang on the right of your block for now.
Assembly of your dragon king
- Sew your BG1 piece to the left of your crown block.
- Centering the crown on the head of your dragon (mark the centre of your crown and line it up with the vertical seam between your dragon’s eye and ear, see arrow), sew your crown unit from step 5 to the top of your dragon head section. Then, trim your block to be 14 1/2″ wide.
- Sew your BG2 piece to your dragon head unit from step 6.
- Continue with step 76 of the Dragon Dreams quilt pattern and finish your quilt as desired.
And that’s all there is to it! You could probably have figured it out by yourself, but I always love to make things as easy as possible! So I hope you enjoyed this new dragon quilt tutorial and found it helpful!

Hi Iβm making the cute dragon baby quilt at the moment. I love your pattern it is so easy to follow. Do you have a dragon cushion pattern? Im making the quilt for my new grandson due next month. Iβd quite like to make something for my other two grandchildren so they donβt feel left out. Diane
Astrid says
Hi!
Thank you, Iβm glad youβre enjoying the pattern! π
I do not have a pattern for a dragon cushion. How about my βLittle Kingdomβ pattern? The castle and watchtower FPP perfectly with the theme. Or you could use the largest size included in βPocket Crownβ for a matching prince/princess pillow?
Chelsea says
Do you have the Kona Cotton SKU’s for their solid blue dragon with the crown? I just ordered the pattern! I am wanting to make this for my newest little one arriving in March. π
Astrid says
Hi Chelsea,
This sample was made with the following Riley Blake Confetti Cottons: Oceanside (main body), Cape Verde (legs), Dove (belly), Curry (spikes) and Swamp (crown and binding).

The dragon with crown gives me serious βPaperbag Princessβ vibes. I think I will gift the book along with the quilt.
Astrid says
Yeah, I have had several people suggest that already. Such a fun idea! π

I love this design for a nephew who is on the way this summer. You mentioned you scaled it down by 50% and I love the idea of a smaller quilt for a baby. Do you happen to have that information on how to scale it down? I didn’t find it in a search on your website. Thanks in advance!
Astrid says
Hi Leslie,
Basically you’d have to take both dimensions for every piece and scale them down as follows:
new dimension = (old dimension – 1/2″) / 2 + 1/2″
It is doable, but some pieces get pretty small and a lot of dimension end in 1/8″.
Good luck!

Love the crown. Just seeing this after finishing my dragon quilt top yesterday. Now I want to make another. Came here to see if you have any samples of night sky background. I did white on my first.
Astrid says
Iβm glad you like the crown addition! π
I havenβt made a night sky version myself, but you could probably find some examples on Instagram if you browse for #dragondreamsquilt!
