Do you need a dragon and bats quilt in your life? Of course you do!
And did you know how perfectly my new Mini Bat Buddies combine with Dragon Dreams?
Have a look and enjoy another pattern mash-up!
The integration of the two patterns is not complicated, but once again, you’ll have to sew one partial seam when joining your quilt sections. Just as a heads-up, no stress! We’ll do it together step by step, you got this! 🙂
A few notes before we start
- Finished quilt size: approximately 55″ x 64″
- You will need the following patterns:
- Dragon Dreams (get the pdf or printed booklet)
- Mini Bat Buddies (get the pdf)
- The fabric requirements for the quilt top are as follows:
Cutting instructions
- You’ll need all the pieces from your Dragon Dreams pattern, except LL, dd, ee and ff.
- In addition, you’ll need the following background pieces:
- For efficient cutting:
- Colours 1-7: Cut your pieces according to the overview table and cutting diagrams from Dragon Dreams (Fig. 2-6).
- Background: Cut your pieces according to the lower half of Fig. 7 (skip the dd and ff pieces), but instead of an ee piece, cut a G piece and your BG3 piece. For the remaining pieces, refer to the diagram below.
Keep your background off-cuts and remaining background fabric to use while piecing the bat blocks!
Making your dragon sections
- Follow steps 1-18 of the Dragon Dreams pattern, skipping step 17.
- Add your BG1 piece to the top.
- Add your BG2 piece to the left.
- Follow steps 19-74 of the pattern to make all remaining body sections.
Making your Bat sections
- Make two flying bat blocks according to the Mini Bat Buddies pattern.
- Add G and H triangles as described in steps 20-22 of the pattern.
- Add your BG5 piece to the right of one of your bat sections and your BG6 piece to the left of the other (see below). Press your seams towards the BG5 and BG6 pieces.
Assembling your dragon and bats quilt top
- Sew your first bat section to the top of your dragon head section.
- Sew your BG3 piece to the top of your vertical wing section.
- Follow steps 77-78 of the Dragon Dreams pattern.
- Sew your BG4 piece to the top of your tail section.
- Sew your vertical wing section to the left of your tail section, leaving a few inches unsewn (see green markings in diagram below).
- Sew your leg section to the bottom.
- Add your dragon head section to the left.
- Add the second bat section to the top and complete the vertical seam between the vertical wing section and the tail section (see green markings in diagram below).
- Add your BG7 piece to the right.
- Add your BG8 and BG9 pieces to the top and bottom.
- Finish (baste, quilt and bind) your quilt top as desired.
And that’s it, your dragon and bats quilt is done! 😊

I’m interested in this adorable mini bats pattern. Question: Are the templates for the foundation piecing actual size, or do they require enlarging? Thx.
