A starry mini quilt

Home sweet home, Sewing & Stuff

It’s my grandma’s birthday today. And because grandmas tend to have everything they need and I thought enough other people would opt for flowers, I made this happy mini quilt for her.

Measuring only 15 by 15 inches, it was by far my smallest quilting project so far. And my fastest! Not having to commit to a throw or even baby quilt felt great. Not just because of the very limited me-time that I have on my hands, but also because it is a great way to try out new things – or to put other WIPs aside for a little while without feeling too guilty.

Not sure why but I generally feel quite reluctant to follow existing patterns, so I decided to create my own. After a small session with graph paper and pencil crayons, I had my design and it was time to play with some half square triangles and flying geese.

I’m quite happy how it turned out and am still amazed by the small amount of time and material that went into it. I found everything I needed in my scrap bin and even cut my binding strips from a fat quarter – definitely a first for me. So overall I’m pretty sure that there will be a few more mini quilts and wall hangings in my near future… 😉 They are also a lot easier to photograph than full-sized quilts, just find yourself a nice tree and ta-dah!

In order to hang the mini quilt I attached two fabric loops through which I fed a wooden dowel. To complete the rustic look, I tightly twisted a few strands of crochet yarn to create a thin rope-like cord.

As I previously did with Kasia’s quilt, I added some hand-stitched details to highlight the orange star and the denim triangles along the sides. Nothing fancy but I love the added texture!

And of course I also added a personal quilt label. I almost forgot about that detail though and only remembered after the binding was completed, so instead of going for my typical embroidered corner triangle, I added a small rectangular patch.

Happy birthday, Oma! 💛 I hope you like your new mini and find some free wall space with a nail!
