Ever since the boys have been able to stand on a chair and push it to the kitchen counter, they have loved to help preparing food. While it can sometimes be tricky to actually get supper finished with all that “help”, baking cookies together can be a really nice activity, especially in the winter. With our youngest monster and our recent move I haven’t started as early as I wanted, but we have managed to do some Christmas baking. We made Stollen a few days ago, a German fruit loaf and one of my season favourites. While Yannick devoured it last year, it was not as big of a hit with the boys this year. They still snacked on all the ingredients happily, but for some reason had to eat around some of them afterwords… I essentially followed Sabine’s recipe, one of the first posts on this blog, but substituted the lemon and orange peel with dried apricots and cranberries. And of course I added some pistachios – I just love those green nuts and throw them in pretty much anything… 😉
But when we made the Stollen, Timo pointed out that he wanted a real apron like his older brother, he did not appreciate the tea towel that I clamped around his neck instead. And so here it is, his very own kitchen dress – apron and chef hat! He was quite excited when he found it waiting for him after his nap and we made a batch of chocolate crinkle cookies. The hat did not stay white for long though, taking turns in sifting cocoa powder and rolling dough balls takes its toll! 😛
We still have a few more recipes on the list. Yannick keeps asking for Vanillekipferl (he couldn’t get enough of them during our last visit at Paul’s cousin Angela’s house) and I’m craving some gingerbread, loaded with lots of spices. Well, we’ll see how we manage during the last few days before Christmas, but at least we can all dress up appropriately!
Happy holidays, everyone! 🎄
