I’ve really been neglecting my friend the sewing machine in the last little while! It wasn’t completely voluntary, but most evenings my bed was calling just a little louder… which is also not too unusual for the last trimester I guess… 😛
But during those few precious sewing moments in the last two months or so I made some rockets and UFOs for Yannick’s big boy’s quilt – which I originally intended to finish for his third birthday, but well, that didn’t happen… But since I also know that I won’t complete that project any time too soon, I thought I’d at least share some impressions of my progress. That way the blog also stays a bit more alive.
It has been a big step from my first experiments with paper-piecing to these latest models of rockets and UFOs. I am still quite intrigued by the fact that you can translate pretty much any designs into quilt blocks, and I truly enjoyed the process of creating these patterns. But I also came to realize that it is not a speedy process – especially since the blocks only measure 6 inches and assembling the vehicles’ sub-components turned out to be quite finicky. That’s why I promised to myself that I will cut down in complexity with my next quilt – simple shapes only! Ultimately, I still enjoy finishing my projects from time to time! 😛
For the same reason there will also be no more than those eight space vehicles and I’ll also try to keep the rest of the quilt as simple as I can. I don’t want to tell you too much yet though, let’s just say that those little alien monsters will play a big role (aren’t they the cutest?!). Anyway, I’ll show you once I’m done, hopefully soon…
UPDATE (11th April 2022):
The rocket and flying saucer quilt blocks are now available as a quilt pattern, see below!
